Mark Pickering spent 40 years in a successful privately owned business. During that time, Mark progressed from the factory floor, through production and quality management, before becoming Managing Director for 19 years, along with serving as a Company Director and major shareholder. 

Under Mark’s leadership, the business achieved consistent profitability and continued growth over many years while navigating expansion, contraction, and structural change. 

He led and developed teams of up to 100 staff, balancing operational discipline with commercial outcomes. As the business grew, complexity increased. At one point, Mark found himself managing the organization through 17 separate in-trays, reflecting a structure that had become overly dependent on him. 

Recognizing this as unsustainable, Mark spearheaded an organizational redesign of the business — clarifying roles, strengthening accountability, improving decision-making, and building leadership capability. This restructure reduced operational risk, improved performance, and supported continued growth over a number of years, ultimately positioning the business for a successful sale. 

In later years, Mark introduced a profit system that allowed shareholders to be paid quarterly dividends without adversely affecting profitability or performance — a system he wishes he had implemented much earlier. The approach provided clear visibility over how much money the business could safely use, where it was being spent, and where inefficiencies existed. This clarity uncovered areas for ongoing savings and contributed to further profit improvement.
